Taylor has not been feeling well for the past few days, and at first it was hard to know if it was because of the surgery Monday, or something else going on.
His fevers have been the same – but he has had trouble keeping food down, and had some pretty serious pain.
This afternoon his condition deteriorated as his pain increased and he went to ER.
Doctors in the Emergency Room at St. Joseph’s Hospital immediately ordered a series of tests upon his arrival: CTs, XRays, blood work and a shunt series to ensure that was working properly.
The problem was in his belly, and he was in a lot of pain.
A CT of the abdomen showed a cecal volvulus or twisting in the intestinal tract. It is unknown how it occurred, but it is a dangerous condition, and he was just taken to the operating room.
Neurosurgeons are present in surgery as well, as the VP shunt which removes excess fluid from Taylor’s brain, has a line that drains directly into this area of the belly. Surgeons may be removing the shunt (externalizing) to prevent infection dangers during the healing process.
He will be in ICU for recovery.
Taylor is a strong man, and was healing well from Monday’s frontal sinus surgery. But this was clearly different. He was extremely uncomfortable and having a very tough time the past few days.
And still, he was wheeled away with a smile. (May have been the dilaudid they gave him for pain) but always such a great smile.
Surgeons have no idea how long this will take, or what all will be involved. Updates will be posted right away.
