Reconstruction Part II

By

The Clinical

Another reconstruction has been scheduled for October 10th.  Surgeons will remove and/or replace some of the facial hardware and add fat grafting or soft tissue on the cheeks, temples and forehead.  They will attempt to reshape the orbits around the eyes as much as possible without damaging any previous work to repair fractures on the cranial floor and sinus areas.  Work on reshaping his nose will come later.

The reshaping of the orbits has been a long-awaited part of the reconstruction process.  Early on in Taylor’s recovery, it was felt that by reshaping the fractured orbits, and moving the left eye forward a bit, it was possible that the stress on that optic nerve would be lessened and vision could then be restored.

With so much time passing as surgeons fought to stabilize the bones on the cranial floor, scar tissue has formed along those optic nerves, and it is now believed that removal of that scar tissue is essential.  The technology does not yet exist for such a procedure (says the neuro-opthalmologist) and so until that time, we pray pray pray.

“A Data Call”  (looking for info)

Holding to the philosophy of ‘leaving no stone left unturned’, if you know of – or know where to look for – this procedure as an existing or explored technology, please let us know here at Team Taylor.  Research is being done in many arenas regarding brain injury, vision loss, scar tissue removal and neuro-plasticity (or the changing brain).  Connecting the visual cortex to the eyes, etc. (when the brain sees, but the eyes do not) is another field of study being explored.  Please keep your ears and eyes open to these new possibilities, and we shall explore them together as a Team.

Taylor’s Faith and commitment is as strong as ever, and he has no doubts about his ongoing progress and recovery.  He views his vision-loss as a temporary issue, with the Lord at the helm as The Great Physician.  : )

Taylor will undergo surgery at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, and will spend a minimum of three days in ICU for recovery.  This surgery will require surgeons to open the previous incision site along the top of his head, ear-to-ear.

Please take a moment and say a special prayer for him.

He wanted me to tell you all that he loves you very much, and appreciates so much all your (unwavering) support.

A prayer T is fond of and says daily:
“God grant me the Serenity, to Accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.”

God Bless
