Update 04/06/12

Today was a good day. They stopped helping him breathe.  Yesterday he was on assisted  breath where he would initiate the breath, and the ventilator would finish for him. Today, they let him breathe on his own for a few minutes….then hours…and he did so well he is still breathing on his own with a respiration rate of a healthy, uninjured person.  The tracheotomy is there for backup, but has not been necessary.

They have lowered his sedation so he could wake up, and the medical staff could assess his movements to see where he is.  He was asked to move his fingers, and he squeezed my hand, and then moved his whole arm.  He was then asked to wiggle his toes, and he did, ever-so-faintly, and then moved his whole leg.  And he’s ticklish on his feet.  At one point they were tending to his mouth and he all but swatted the nurse’s hand away from his face.  So he’s much better.  They were adjusting a line on the top of his foot.  He didn’t like that either, and pulled his foot away, bending his knee to do so.

This is all good news.  They are pulling the tubes one-by-one as they are no longer necessary.  He is on 1/4 the sedative he was on yesterday, and his vitals are stable.

He gets an x-ray every morning with the trache tube, and today his lungs were much better than yesterday.  He is coughing, which helps a lot.

Please keep the prayers flowing.  It’s working.
